Title: Autumn Good-bye
Author: SaRa
Rating: G

Disclaimer: I have no money and I still won't have any after writing this. In other words, I make no money from this, so don't sue me. (I have no money, remember?) Star Trek belongs to Paramount, which belongs to Viacom. The song lyrics are from Britney Spears' "Autumn Goodbye" and she can keep them for all I care; I don't own them and don't want to. :P
Author's note: This is my first Star Trek story (the parody I did doesn't count), and, be warned, it won't be my last.

"I never promised you a happy ending;
You never said you wouldn't make me cry;
But summer love will keep us warm long after our autumn goodbye;
Thinking of you and the love of our lives in the sweet summer time;
So sad but true, we must leave it behind in our hearts, in our minds."

"Well, Bev, I've got to go. Jean-Luc wants me to be on time for duty just once. Imagine that."

Beverly smiled at her husband's image on the viewscreen.

"I'll see you in a week," he said as the message ended.

A week. That's not too long, but it certainly is long enough, she thought. She'd survive. It wasn't like she had nothing to do but sit around and wait for Jack Crusher to show up. She had a son to take care of and a practice to tend to. That would most certainly keep her busy. Beverly turned when she heard Wesley walk into the room.

"Mom, can Jimmy come over so we could play baseball?" asked five year old Wesley. When his mom nodded, he grinned at her and then ran out of the room.

Beverly sighed and sat down to complete some work which she had started earlier that day.

At last, it was the day that Jack would be coming home. Beverly had wonderful plans for them. Three whole months for nothing but family. Why couldn't this happen more often? Well, at least it's happening now, she thought. The door chime sounded, ripping her away from her thoughts. She quickly walked to the door and threw it open, smiling broadly.

Her smile disappeared when she saw Jean-Luc Picard, Jack's commanding officer, standing there in place of her husband. "Jean-Luc?" she asked, worry and fear in her voice.

"Beverly..." Picard took a deep breath, hating himself for what he was about to say to his best friend's wife. "Jack was killed on an away mission."

Hot tears stung Beverly's eyes as soon as Jean-Luc's words registered in her mind. "No," she said in a whisper. "No," she said louder. "Oh, God...Jack..."

Jean-Luc stepped towards her and gently guided her into the living room. Beverly sat on the couch, and then the tears started. She wiped them away; tried to keep more from coming, but couldn't. "How?" she questioned.

Picard told her about the mission, but didn't go into it too deeply, feeling that now wasn't the best time for exact details. "I'm sorry," he finished.

It all seemed so surreal. Here she was, standing in a cemetery in the middle of November, watching as her husband's casket was placed in the ground covered with dirt. It just couldn't be real. Yet, it was. Standing to her right was Jean-Luc and to her left, Walker Keel, another very close friend. He was the one who had brought her and Jack together. She couldn't help but think that this was all Keel's fault.

They stood there for ten minutes after everyone else had left. When they got too cold to stand there any longer, they found a warm restaurant not far from the cemetery and sat down in a corner booth. In the background, they could hear a song from the twentieth century being played in the background. Despite it's upbeat, cheerful rhythm, the lyrics were, for the most part, perfect for the past few days' events.

"I never promised you a happy ending;
You never said you wouldn't make me cry;
But summer love will keep us warm long after our autumn goodbye;

Thinking of you and the love of our lives in the sweet summertime;
So sad but true, we must leave it behind in our hearts, in our minds;
From April through September, bittersweet was the love that we shared;
Don't forget, I remember;

I never promised you a happy ending;
You never said you wouldn't make me cry;
But summer love will keep us warm long after our autumn goodbye;

I never promised you a happy ending;
You never said you wouldn't make me cry;
But summer love will keep us warm long after our autumn goodbye;

Memories can fade but my heart has a place for the smile on your face;
And maybe some day we can be more than friends;
Love will find us again;
Red leaves and blue tomorrows;
Time to give back the love that we shared on the time that we borrowed;

I never promised you a happy ending;
You never said you wouldn't make me cry;
But summer love will keep us warm long after our autumn goodbye;

I never promised you a happy ending;
You never said you wouldn't make me cry;
But summer love will keep us warm long after our autumn goodbye;

From April through September, bittersweet was the love that we shared;
Don't forget, I remember, baby

I never promised you a happy ending;
You never said you wouldn't make me cry;
But summer love will keep us warm long after our autumn goodbye;

I never promised you a happy ending;
You never said you wouldn't make me cry;
But summer love will keep us warm long after our autumn goodbye;

We'll leave behind the summertime;
Our hearts, our minds, they will remind;
We won't forget the day we met;
The day we cried;
Autumn goodbye;

I never promised you a happy ending;
You never said you wouldn't make me cry;
But summer love will keep us warm long after our autumn goodbye."

The End!
